End the slaughter of wild horses in the US
The Issue
As a lifelong lover of wild horses, I have watched in horror as these majestic symbols of freedom and beauty are rounded up, sold, and, in many cases, sent to slaughterhouses. These horses are part of America's heritage, and their presence in the wild should be preserved, not eradicated for commercial gain or short-sighted policies.
The Trump administration has ramped up the sale of wild horses under the pretext of population control and land management. This policy often results in these horses being sold for slaughter. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) estimates that over 45,000 wild horses and burros are currently confined in overcrowded holding facilities, with many likely facing eventual sale due to a lack of funding and space.
The 1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act was passed to protect these animals from capture, branding, harassment, or death. Yet, current practices contradict this law and undermine decades of conservation efforts. Wild horses play a critical role in the ecosystem by helping to maintain the balance of the flora and fauna, and their removal can have detrimental effects on the environment.
We need to halt all sales of wild horses to slaughterhouses and implement sustainable and humane management solutions. Measures such as fertility control, expanding living spaces, and partnerships with animal welfare groups would ensure that these animals can live a safe and natural life in the wild.
By signing this petition, you are voicing your support for the protection and humane treatment of America's wild horses. Let us hold the administration accountable and demand they honor our national heritage by safeguarding these irreplaceable symbols of the American spirit. This is a call to take action to protect our wild horses with dignity and respect. Please sign this petition now.
