PARROTS AND COCKATOOS BELONG IN THE WILD NOT CAGES

Our main objection to stop pet shops selling parrots parakeets and cockatoos.

The Pet Animals Act 1951 establishes a regulatory regime for "pet shops" under which local authorities (district and borough councils) are responsible for inspecting and licensing premises.

We are calling for these Local authorities to cease any new licensing and ban any further applications for pet shops to sell parrots, parakeets and cockatoos, tackling the pet trade.

These intelligent animals are a 10 to 90 year commitment far too accessible! We should not have the option to impulse buy an animal that may outlive us.

This just adds to the strain already on rehoming centres as many people don’t realise the commitment it takes to keep a parrot, we shouldn’t be going out for a browse and coming home with a life long commitment.

The next concern is where they get the parrots from in the first place. We’ve all heard of puppy mills; well, the same can be true for parrots. Most pet shop parrots come from breeders who choose parrots they don’t want to keep as part of their breeding stock, they’re often not hand tame and have little to no experience with people, the little experience they have is usually being transferred from an aviary to the shop which isn’t a positive experience, Birds never forget and this could hinder your attempts at taming them.

Pet shops selling parrots and the lack of disease testing. They have many parrots kept in a confined space without any being checked for diseases, it’s a recipe for disaster.

We have many concerns about pet shops selling parrots and would always recommend adopting from a registered rescue.

There are all kinds of stressful stimuli in a pet shop that can harm a bird’s health and mental stability. Loud noises, constant light, poor nutrition, strange faces looming suddenly in front of them, probably (but not always) less than ideal caging situations, and sometimes poor cleanliness. Add to the fact that upon purchase, the bird is abruptly separated from its cage-mates – the only familiar things to it – and packed off to a new home, new cage, new diet, new humans poking their fingers in wanting a tame pet.

75% of parrots living in captivity are living in less than suitable living conditions and it has been estimated that the average parrot will have 5-10 homes in the first 7 years of its life.

If a parrot lives to 90 years, that might mean they could have up to 128 homes* if they live to 90!

Theoretical example *(90 years, divided by 7 x 10 max homes =128)

Now is the time we need our government to take action, with the world on a ticking clock, animals and nature are declining, the rainforest are the lungs of the planet as we can do better this one small step would mean bigger change for exotic birds and tackling the pet trade.

Parrots, parakeets and cockatoos that are currently housed in pet shops should immediately be rehoused to a sanctuary for them to live out their lives as free as possible in captivity.

AND all pet shops are banned from selling any further parakeets and/or parrots immediately and NO FURTHER LICENSES ARE GRANTED.
