End the Sale of Fireworks to the General Public in the UK

The Issue

November the 5th, Bonfire night.

Why do we hear fireworks on the 2nd, 3rd and the 4th being lit up in people gardens? Many public firework displays were held this weekend (2nd-3rd November). Tomorrow is the 5th, bonfire night, so there will be fireworks, also on the 6th, 7th and probably all the way up to the end of the weekend (10th November 2024).

More than 100 horses have been killed or injured every year in the UK between November 2010 and March 2024 through the result of fireworks.

According to a UK Parliament Committees document, there are 92 dog-related accidents per year in the UK that are caused by fireworks.

The current freedom to sell fireworks in the UK to the general public poses significant safety and environmental risks.

Every year, there are around 1,000 firework-related injuries in England alone, notably peaking during the Bonfire Night celebrations in early November (source: NHS England). Major pollutants like heavy metals and toxic gases released during firework displays not only contaminate air quality but also cause detrimental effects on wildlife and domestic animals, creating distress and potential harm (source: Environmental Science & Technology Journal).

By ceasing the sale of fireworks to the general public, we could implement controlled display practices thereby guaranteeing safety, reducing pollution, and preventing widespread distress among animals. Therefore, it is vital that we urge the UK government to take this action.
