End the Quality Point Discrepancy Between RISD Student Athletes and Fine Arts Clubs

The Issue

As students at J.J. Pearce High School in Richardson Texas, we have seen, first-handedly, what students are willing to do for their GPA. One of the major issues involving students' GPAs is their elective courses, specifically sports and fine arts courses, like band, orchestra, and choir. For fine arts courses, a student can gain 10 quality points for being in the top level of whichever course they are in, so if they get a 100 in the class they get a 110 factored into their GPA. This, however, is not true for sports and clubs. Student-Athletes across RISD schools get no quality points for being on the top, (Varsity), team, or for joining clubs like Stampede and Pacesetters which are notoriously difficult to get into, and many suffer GPA-related consequences as a result. Students have to think twice before joining their favorite sports team when signing up for courses for the upcoming school year, as for many, it means sacrificing their GPA, and creating unnecessary difficulties when striving to place in the top 10 percent of their class. There are countless examples of students who will quit their sport, solely due to the detrimental effects that it has on their GPA and their chances of getting into that school they've been dreaming of since they were just kids. So it is time to end this discrepancy and add quality points to varsity-level sports and try-out clubs, so students don't have to choose between their favorite sport and their favorite college.
