My son has autism, and like many families across Ontario, we have been waiting far too long for essential support. He is five years old and has been on the waitlist for core services under the Ontario Autism Program (OAP) since September 2022. The devastating reality is that current funding decisions are prioritizing families placed on the waitlist since 2020, meaning my son might not receive the necessary support until he is 8 or 9 years old. This timeline is unacceptable.

Early intervention is critical for children with autism. Experts and extensive research have repeatedly highlighted that access to early support can significantly improve a child's development and long-term outcomes. Yet, countless families like mine are left in limbo, unable to afford the prohibitive costs of private therapy without the assistance of OAP funding. We should not be forced into financial ruin, facing the heart-wrenching choice of taking out second mortgages or maxing out credit cards to ensure our children have a shot at a successful future.

The state of the Ontario Autism Program is in crisis. With over 64,000 children on the waitlist and families waiting years for support, it is time for accountability and change. We demand an immediate audit of the Ontario Autism Program to rigorously assess its current operations, funding decisions, and transparency. This audit should focus on ensuring a fair and equitable distribution of resources and prioritizing early intervention.

We urge the Ontario government to take immediate steps to end the waitlist for core services. Potential measures may include reallocating funds to eliminate existing bottlenecks, increasing program funding to accommodate all children in need without further delay, and implementing urgent reforms that guarantee efficiency and transparency.
