End the New Recycling Tax on milk containers

End the New Recycling Tax on milk containers
The Issue
The Government of BC as of February 1,2022 imposed a new recycling tax on all purchases of milk, milk substitute containers including paper based or plastic.
Each container now requires a payment of 9cents plus a refundable fee of 10cents.
1) this is a slippery slope of taxation on necessary food products.
2) how is this a benefit to the economy or recycling in general?
Under the new system you will be required to keep, store, package in clear plastic bags, your milk containers and individually take them to select return-it centers to collect your 10cent deposit.
This will put undue strain on the majority of the population and contribute to a greater carbon footprint (which we are already being taxed for). You will loose the 9cent tax on each container.
Prior to this new tax, British Columbians were doing an excellent job of returning milk containers for recycling through various free curbside recycling programs. These programs had no requirement to store containers until it was economically feasible to gather and make a trip to the privately subsidized Return-it centers. This new tax is a solution to a problem that doesn’t exist, and another added tax to our population.
The greatest burden of this tax will be borne by the elderly, low income, single parent families etc.
Can we anticipate that soup cans, coffee cups (oh, Vancouver is already taxing those), any plastic , metal, paper container used to bring needed food/ products into your home will have a similar tax?
Please sign this petition to repeal the tax and fee for recycling milk and milk similar containers.
Thank you.
