End the Monetisation of Missing Persons Cases by Psychic Businesses

The issue

The psychic  industry in Australia currently operates within a regulatory loophole under the Australian Consumer Law. This loophole allows operators to engage in predatory and unconscionable commercial practices that take advantage of vulnerable individuals and families. A particularly alarming example is found in businesses like "Kyneton Paranormal" in Victoria, which profit from the pain of families by monetizing active missing persons investigations and tragedies.

This exploitation is deeply personal for many families affected by the actions of such businesses, as they turn sensitive cases involving missing children, like Gus Lamont and William Tyrell, into streams of revenue. Through mechanisms like streaming revenue and paid subscriptions, these businesses publicly claim to contact missing children, adding another layer of distress to already grieving families.

The lack of strict regulations and oversight in this industry means there's a grave potential for harm, both emotional and financial. It endangers the integrity of ongoing investigations and can mislead the public and affected families. These commercial activities should be subjected to the same standards and scrutiny as any other professional service where public interest is concerned.

To combat this exploitation, we are calling on the Australian government to enact stricter regulations under the Australian Consumer Law to oversee the operations of the psychic and paranormal industry. These regulations should prohibit the monetisation of sensitive investigations and tragedies, ensuring that victims and their families are not further victimised in their time of need.

We urge the authorities to create a dedicated oversight body to monitor and regulate these activities, implement penalties for businesses that engage in predatory practices, and provide families with the protection and support they deserve.

Please join us in calling for these necessary changes by signing this petition. Together, we can advocate for more ethical practices and protect those affected by predatory commercial activities in the psychic and paranormal industry in Australia. Your voice matters; sign the petition today.
