This is Bella’s story.

Bella was a gentle, healthy two-year-old dog surrendered to a council pound after her family could no longer keep her. She was friendly, affectionate, and eager for a second chance. But within days, Bella was euthanised—not because she was sick or dangerous, but because the pound was full and there was nowhere for her to go.

Bella’s story is not unique. Every year in Australia, thousands of healthy, loving animals like her are killed simply because our system is overstretched and underfunded. These lives could be saved with stronger government support for desexing, adoption, and no-kill shelter policies.

It doesn’t have to be this way.

Petition to End the Euthanasia of Healthy Animals in Australia

To the Honourable Members of the Australian Parliament,

Every year in Australia, tens of thousands of healthy and treatable dogs and cats are euthanised—not because they are sick or dangerous, but simply because they are unwanted, homeless, or shelters are overcrowded.

This is unnecessary, preventable, and deeply out of step with the values of a compassionate nation.

Other countries and cities have shown that a no-kill approach—where more than 90% of animals are saved—is possible when governments commit to funding and supporting the right strategies. Australia can do the same.

We, the undersigned, call on the Australian Government to:

Set a national target to end the euthanasia of healthy and treatable companion animals in shelters and pounds by 2030.
Fund free or low-cost desexing programs in every state and territory to prevent unwanted litters.
Ban the retail sale of puppies and kittens unless sourced from registered rescues, shelters, or foster care programs.
Introduce strict national breeder regulations, with enforcement to end puppy factories and backyard breeding.
Require public reporting from all shelters and pounds on intake, rehoming, and euthanasia figures for transparency and accountability.
Support foster networks and adoption programs to ensure every healthy animal has the chance at a loving home.

Why this matters:

Healthy animals are being killed due to lack of space and resources—not because they are unadoptable.

Grassroots rescues and foster carers are already saving lives, but they cannot do it alone.
With government leadership, Australia can become a no-kill nation, where euthanasia is reserved only for animals that are suffering beyond treatment.

We ask our leaders to act now and ensure that no healthy animal loses its life simply for being homeless.
