End the excessive use of AI within Waco Civic Theatre
The Issue
As artists, designers, and actors, we love and respect our local community more than anything. Being part of the Waco Civic Theatre family has been an important part of most of our journeys and commitment to the arts. However, it is disheartening to see the increasing reliance on Artificial Intelligence within our community theatre. This overuse sidesteps local talent and robs passionate artists of the opportunity to grow and learn through hands-on experiences.
AI tools are now woven into many facets of the theatre’s operations. They are used to generate imagery and captions for social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook, to shape audition preparations on SignUpGenius, and even to influence screened backgrounds on stage and actor bios through AI formatting and stylization. While we understand AI is quick, efficient, and easily accessible, this extensive use takes away from the authentic artistic expressions that are the heart and soul of theatre
Waco is filled with enthusiastic artists who are more than willing to give up their time and talents, often for the sheer love of the craft. By using AI, we overshadow potential. By using AI, we hinder the nurturing of local talent, that if given the chance, could flourish and perhaps even supercharge our local arts scene.
Theatre, is a medium that thrives on human connection, emotion, and creativity. Traits that AI simply cannot replicate. I strongly urge the Waco Civic Theatre to return to its roots and prioritize human artistry. Local artists and graphic designers are eager to contribute not to earn money, but to protect a culture of art that is by the community, for the community. We understand that AI is an easy resource, but many people are willing to design and even work for free just for the opportunity to share their work with the community we love.
AI is not inherently bad, many of us us it in our day-to-day life. However, the purposes for which it is currently being utilized (those most visible to the community, such as social media, backgrounds, and bios) are cheapening the name and reputation of the theater.
As artists we must push for a change in the way we use AI. Waco Civic Theatre needs to reduce its dependence on these technologies. By doing so, we open doors for emerging talent, foster a nurturing environment for growth, and ensure that our theatre remains a platform for human expression. Sign this petition to push for less AI and more human created content at the Waco Civic Theater.
