Equality in Schools: Apply Appearance Rules Fairly to Staff and Students

“Do as I say, not as I do” has no place in our schools.
This attitude—where students are forced to follow strict appearance rules while staff are allowed total freedom—is not only outdated, it’s damaging. It teaches children that fairness doesn't matter and that authority doesn't have to answer to the same rules it imposes.

We, as parents, guardians, and community members across the UK, are calling for consistent, fair, and respectful school policies that apply to everyone—students and staff alike.

We're calling for schools to treat all members—students and staff—equally when it comes to appearance policies. If rules about uniforms, hairstyles, and jewellery are enforced, they should apply to everyone. Respect is a two-way street. It’s time for fairness.

Petition Text:

As concerned parents and guardians, we believe that fairness, equality, and mutual respect should be core values in every school environment.

Currently, students are held to strict standards regarding uniforms, hairstyles, and jewellery—with little to no flexibility. Meanwhile, staff members are often free to wear their own clothes, choose any hairstyle, and wear accessories or jewellery without restriction.

This double standard sends the wrong message to our children: that respect and accountability are not shared equally. It teaches obedience without fairness and contributes to a growing lack of trust and respect between students and authority figures.

We believe that if schools want to be respected, they must lead by example. Respect is earned by being consistent, just, and inclusive—not by enforcing one set of rules for children and another for adults.

We are calling for:

A full review of appearance-related rules across the school system.

Equal expectations and dress standards for both students and staff.

Student and parent voices to be included in shaping future policy.

We are not opposed to structure or discipline—we support it when it is fair and respectful. But this is a call for a better, more equal system. One where adults model the values they expect young people to follow.

We urge school leaders, local education authorities, and policymakers to take this seriously. The message is clear:

If you want children to respect you, show them what respect looks like.
