Whilst doing a project based on this, I've become deeply aware of the horrific conditions that chickens endure in confinement. Chickens, living beings who deserve respect and proper care, are currently housed in spaces scarcely larger than an A4 sheet of paper. This is not just inadequate, it's downright inhumane. Not only this, but currently more than 202 million chickens are slaughtered every day.

These tiny, cramped environments, which measure about 0.075 square meters, fall shockingly short of the recommended minimum space of 0.37 square meters per chicken. Such conditions impact not only the physical well-being of these animals, as they are unable to move freely, stretch their wings, or engage in natural behaviors, but also severely affect their mental health, making their lives incredibly stressful and painful.

Animal welfare organizations, including the Humane Society International, advocate for better practices, but progress is slow. Recent studies indicate that chickens kept in such poor conditions are plagued by higher disease rates, increased stress levels, and, subsequently, a shorter lifespan.

This issue is more pressing than ever. By denying chickens these basic living conditions, we are not only being ethically irresponsible, but also supporting a system that leads to decreased quality of poultry products that eventually reach our tables. Improving the living conditions of chickens - providing them with proper space, light, and a clean environment - is an achievable change that requires immediate attention from industry leaders and legislators.
