End Taxation on Disability and Low-Income Individuals

The Issue

As a disabled individual unable to work, I am faced with the harsh reality of financial struggle. My disability income is not taxed, but my alimony is. The result? Barely making ends meet, with no money left for the month to live off of. This situation is not unique to me; many others in similar circumstances face this same struggle.

The tax burden on those who earn less than $50,000 annually or are on disability benefits should be reassessed. These funds are not considered 'earned income', yet they are still subject to taxation. It's worth noting that divorcees who got divorced after 2019 do not have to pay taxes on their alimony - a policy that should apply universally.

According to the National Bureau of Economic Research, people with disabilities have significantly lower employment rates and earnings than people without disabilities (NBER). This places an undue burden on those already struggling financially.

We call upon our lawmakers and policymakers for change – end taxation on disability benefits and low-income individuals earning less than $50,000 annually. Let's make it fair across the board for all! Please sign this petition if you believe in equitable tax policies for everyone.
