End Stroke Inequality in Scotland: Introduce 24/7 Thrombectomy

End Stroke Inequality in Scotland: Introduce 24/7 Thrombectomy
The Issue
Stroke doesn’t wait for office hours - and neither should life-saving treatment.
A stroke can strike anyone at any time. Just ask the Bundy family. Tony Bundy, a husband, father, and friend, was only 53 when he suffered a stroke on a Sunday afternoon. But because Scotland doesn’t provide 24/7 thrombectomy - the gold standard treatment for major strokes - it took 17 agonising hours before Tony got the care he needed. By then, it was too late. Tony lost his life. His family lost their rock. And they are left asking, “What if?” No family should have to live with that question.
Yet Tony’s story is far from rare. Figures from Chest, Heart and Stroke Scotland show that only 1 in 7 Scots who need a thrombectomy actually get one. Hundreds of people every year are being denied access to the treatment that could mean the difference between recovery and death, between independence and lifelong disability.
Thrombectomy is not a luxury. It’s a lifeline. It can mean walking out of hospital instead of never coming home. But it only works if delivered quickly. Every minute counts. Every delay puts lives and futures at risk. The stakes could not be higher.
Now is the time to act. Tony’s story has shone a spotlight on a failure that can no longer be ignored. There is cross-party support in the Scottish Parliament to make thrombectomy available 24/7. But the Scottish Government needs to feel public pressure to make it happen. That’s where you come in.
Sign this petition. Demand 24/7 thrombectomy in Scotland. Let’s stop asking “What if?”—and start saving lives.
