End Sleep Deprivation: Advocate for School Start Times of 8 AM or Later Nationwide

End Sleep Deprivation: Advocate for School Start Times of 8 AM or Later Nationwide
The Issue
To: Policymakers, Educators, and School Administrators Nationwide
Every day, millions of students in the United States struggle with early school start times that interfere with their health, academic performance, and overall well-being. The current system is not designed with students’ best interests in mind, especially considering the significant health risks of sleep deprivation. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has found that the early start times in most U.S. schools are detrimental to student success, contributing to chronic sleep deprivation.
The Problem:
• Sleep Deprivation Crisis: Studies show that teenagers need 8–10 hours of sleep each night. However, with most schools starting before 8 AM, many students are unable to get the sleep they need.
• Negative Impact on Academic Performance: Lack of sleep leads to difficulty concentrating, poor academic performance, and a decline in mental health, including depression and anxiety.
• Health Risks: Sleep deprivation is linked to obesity, weakened immune systems, and other physical and mental health problems.
The Solution:
• School Start Time of 8 AM or Later: Research consistently shows that a start time of 8 AM or later improves students’ health, mood, and academic outcomes. With later start times, students are able to get adequate rest, reducing fatigue, increasing alertness, and improving their overall well-being.
Several schools and districts across the U.S. have already shifted to later start times and seen positive results, but many schools have not yet made this change.
We are petitioning for the adoption of 8 AM or later start times nationwide to ensure that every student has the opportunity to rest, recover, and succeed both academically and in life.
Why This Matters:
• Health Benefits: Later start times give students the sleep they need, which is crucial for both mental and physical health.
• Academic Success: Well-rested students are more focused, engaged, and likely to perform better academically.
• Improved Mental Health: Reducing sleep deprivation can decrease anxiety, depression, and other mental health struggles.
What We Are Asking:
We call on school boards, administrators, and policymakers to:
• Mandate school start times of 8:00 AM or later, to ensure students are not forced to wake up before dawn.
• Support research and best practices that show the positive impact of later start times on students’ health and performance.
• Encourage nationwide adoption of later school start times as part of a broader effort to prioritize student well-being.
Join us in fighting for the health and future of our students.
By signing this petition, you are supporting the push for better school schedules. This is about giving students the sleep they deserve and ensuring they can succeed in school and beyond.
Let’s work together to ensure that all students across the nation can start their school day at 8 AM or later.
