Ban Shark Finning in Thailand

Ban Shark Finning in Thailand
The Issue
As an avid lover of sharks and a passionate advocate for marine conservation, I’m extremely concerned about the cruel practice of shark finning in Thailand. This petition aims to raise awareness and urge the Thai government to take immediate action by implementing a complete ban on shark finning within its borders. Shark populations around the world are in rapid decline and are in desperate need of help.
Growing up, my fascination with the ocean and sharks led me to appreciate their important role in maintaining healthy marine ecosystems. Sharks are not only majestic creatures but also apex predators that help regulate the balance of our oceans. However, the brutal act of shark finning threatens their existence and poses a severe risk to our vulnerable underwater world.
Shark finning is an inhumane practice where fishermen catch sharks only for their fins, slicing them off while still alive before tossing the rest of the body back into the ocean. This wasteful process not only causes immense suffering but also disrupts entire marine food chains. Without sharks, populations of smaller fish can grow uncontrollably, leading to imbalances that can have devastating consequences on coral reefs and other marine life.
Thailand plays a significant role in this issue as one of the world's largest exporters of shark fins. The demand for these fins drives fishermen to engage in unsustainable practices such as finning, pushing many species of shark towards extinction. It is crucial for Thailand to take responsibility and lead by example by passing legislation that prohibits all forms of shark finning.
By banning shark finning within its borders, Thailand can set an example for other countries facing similar challenges and contribute significantly towards global efforts to protect these vulnerable species from extinction.
Sharks going extinct will directly affect the lives of humans. There are many diseases that would go uncured without sharks. There would also be an increase in global warming, as sharks hold lots carbon in their body. Once they die, the carbon gets moved to the bottom of the ocean, therefore if sharks went extinct there would be an increase in carbon in the atmosphere.
Implementing this ban would align with international agreements like CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species), which seeks to regulate trade involving endangered wildlife species including several types of sharks.
I encourage all compassionate individuals who share my love for sharks and concern for our oceans future to join me in urging the Thai government to immediately pass legislation that bans all forms of shark finning. Together, we can make a difference and ensure the survival of these magnificent creatures for future generations.
