Dear Supporters
Rodeo operators like to pretend they are community-spirited and often donate to local schools, charities and community organisations.
In my part of the world, the Rodeo Association of Moruya is reported to have sponsored a plaque, unveiled on Anzac Day, 25 April, to commemorate the Volunteer Defence Corps.
I find the idea of perpetrators of cruelty to animals trying to associate themselves with the memory of people who defended this country in war quite offensive. And it is not just that every rodeo involves legalised cruelty. In the case of the Rodeo Association of Moruya, their 2023 event featured cruelty OVER AND ABOVE even what is allowed by the inadequate laws of NSW, when a terrified steer thrashed about so much in the chute that he almost tore off his horn (see picture above, courtesy of Animal Liberation NSW) and was left for days without veterinary care.
The NSW RSPCA subsequently issued two fines in respect of the cruelty inflicted on this animal.
Not only that, but spokespeople for the Moruya Rodeo Association later said the injury was "minor" and that the steer had been dealt with "in an appropriate manner".
And these are the people who are trying to present themselves as good citizens, popping up on Anzac Day with money for plaques.
No amount of community donations can excuse cruelty to animals or justify the way horses and cattle, including calves, are treated in rodeo events.
The responsible NSW Minister, the Hon. Tara Moriarty MLC, has committed to a review of animal welfare legislation this year, the same legislation that currently includes an exemption for rodeos.
Please contact Minister Moriarty and tell her that rodeos must end. Peaceful herd animals should not be pushed by pain and fear into unnatural behaviours for the entertainment of people.

Thank you for speaking up for animals.
