End religious violence and ensure justice in Nigeria

The Issue

As a youth ambassador representing the hopes of young Nigerians, I have seen the terrible effects of religious violence on our communities. Families are torn apart, children are denied an education, and fear hangs over many. I recall visiting a community in Kaduna where a school had been attacked. Children felt unsafe walking to class, and parents worried constantly about their families. Witnessing young people's potential crushed by fear deeply influenced my commitment to peace, justice, and youth advocacy.

Nigeria is one of the most religiously diverse countries in Africa, home to over 200 million people, with Christian and Muslim communities living alongside each other for generations. However, in recent years, religiously motivated violence has increased. The Global Peace Index shows that Nigeria ranks among the top countries in Africa for deaths from organized violence, affecting thousands of civilians each year. Communities in northern and central Nigeria have faced repeated attacks that have displaced families, destroyed homes, and disrupted local economies. Marginalized and poor groups often suffer most from these attacks, worsening cycles of inequality and fear.

This crisis goes beyond politics—it is a humanitarian emergency that threatens the very fabric of Nigerian society. We appeal to both the national government and international organizations that can drive meaningful change, including the United Nations Human Rights Council, the African Union, ECOWAS, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and global human rights groups. We need immediate and effective action to ensure justice for victims, hold perpetrators accountable, and protect vulnerable communities throughout the country.

Concrete steps can be taken to tackle this urgent problem:

1. Strengthening law enforcement and security measures to respond quickly to outbreaks of violence.

2. Ensuring accountability through fair and transparent judicial processes, so offenders face justice, and deterrence is strengthened.

3. Promoting interfaith dialogue and community initiatives to build understanding, respect, and reconciliation among religious groups.

4. Supporting victims with humanitarian aid, education, and economic empowerment programs, helping those affected rebuild their lives and their communities.

This issue is personal to me as a young Nigerian watching friends and community members live in fear simply because of their faith. It is also a call to action for all citizens and global allies who support human rights, peace, and equality.

We cannot stay silent while religious violence continues to destabilize our communities. I urge you to sign this petition today to demand urgent government action, justice for victims, and ongoing international support. Together, we can create a Nigeria where diversity is celebrated, safety is guaranteed, and young people can pursue their dreams without fear.

Sign now and join the call for peace, justice, and protection for all Nigerians.
