The issue

My family member was one of many who was impacted by the flaws of an algorithm-based assessment system for aged care support. As portrayed in the Four Corners show "The Waiting Game," the reliance on automated decisions often results in inadequate and incorrect evaluations of the support levels for our elderly. These evaluations are commonly carried out by algorithms rather than trained professionals, leading to tragic and preventable outcomes.

A national tragedy is unfolding as our loved ones struggle to receive proper in-home care. Reports suggest that 99% of these algorithmic assessments are either incorrect or never reviewed by a human. Instead of offering the care and support that our elder generation deserves, this system exposes them to immense risk and suffering. It is deeply concerning to learn that some have died awaiting an accurate human assessment. This is the generation responsible for getting Medicare and National Health Care up an running to protect themselves and following generations to be able to access health care. They have paid into it all their lives and are now being left to die waiting for this care.

This unjust reliance on technology over human judgment must end. We call upon the Minister for Aged Care and policymakers to take a hard look at the systems in place. Is this the way we would treat our own grandparents or parents? The indignity and inefficiency of this process cannot continue unabated. Decision-makers, including Minister Sam Rae, must prioritise the well-being of our elderly and ensure assessments are conducted and verified by qualified human professionals, rather than impersonal algorithms.

This is a call for change. Policies must be reformed to enable skilled health professionals to lead the assessment process. This is the only way to ensure that the needs of our senior citizens are correctly and compassionately addressed. Algorithms can be a useful tool, but they should support, not replace, the experienced human touch required in such sensitive evaluations.

We demand transparency and accountability in the assessment process, and most importantly, the cessation of algorithm-only decision-making in aged care assessments. By signing this petition, you join a collective voice advocating for the dignity, respect, and proper care of our elder population. Sign now to end this injustice and to provide our seniors with the care and attention they rightfully deserve.
