End Racial Profiling by ICE
The Issue
My mom came to this country not with hopes of committing crimes, not with dreams of “stealing jobs”, but with aspirations of working hard and building a better life. While not knowing any English, her commitment and determination to build a better life for our family saw her working tirelessly at a car wash and attending language classes. Today, she is an American citizen and a principal at a school, speaking fluent English. Her journey exemplifies dedication and perseverance. However, her path would have been stopped much earlier if she had been subjected to racial profiling by ICE, merely due to her ethnicity, job, or linguistic abilities.
Racial profiling by ICE is an ongoing issue that unjustly targets individuals based on their race, ethnicity, or the language they speak rather than credible information of illegal activity. Practices like these sow fear and mistrust in communities, erode the integrity of law enforcement and government institutions, and violate FUNDAMENTAL HUMAN RIGHTS. Numerous incidents have surfaced where individuals have been interrogated, detained, or even deported unjustly — their only 'crime' being their resemblance to preconceived profiles.
According to a study by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), racial profiling by law enforcement does not enhance security, but instead, diverts resources away from necessary investigations. Additionally, research indicates that these practices disproportionately affect people of color, exacerbating societal inequalities.
It's time we put a stop to this discriminatory practice. ICE policies and practices need urgent reform to eradicate racial profiling. This includes implementing mandatory bias training for agents, establishing transparent procedures and checks, and promoting accountability through independent audits and oversight. Effective changes can ensure that investigations focus on tangible criminal activities, helping to build trust within communities and uphold the principles of justice and equality.
Join me in urging the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and lawmakers to take concrete steps to end racial profiling practices. By signing this petition, you're standing with those who have been unfairly targeted and supporting a future where every individual is treated with dignity and respect, regardless of their background. Let's ensure no one else has to fight the battles my Mom could have faced; together, we can demand change and foster a more equitable America. Please sign this petition today.
