The Issue

Our children deserve equal rights to education without experiencing racism, bias, or discrimination. Growing up in Alvin, Texas, many of us have witnessed firsthand the lasting effects of its history as a 'Sundown Town.' However, history should remain in the past, and our schools should serve as a beacon for progress and inclusion, not a vehicle for age-old injustices. Currently, Black students at Alvin High School face an unacceptable environment where racial slurs, profiling, and stereotypical mockery are a daily reality. With Black students comprising less than 10% of the student body, these acts of discrimination are not isolated incidents but indicate a systemic issue that requires urgent attention.

The school administration must take immediate and definitive action to address this toxic culture. This includes implementing comprehensive diversity and sensitivity training for all staff and students, establishing a clear and enforceable anti-discrimination policy, and creating channels for students to safely report instances of racism without fear of retaliation. Additionally, a dedicated team should be appointed to monitor compliance and evaluate the effectiveness of these measures continuously.

This petition is a call to action. It is imperative that the school board of Alvin Independent School District acknowledges and rectifies these ongoing issues. We cannot stand by while our children suffer in silence. They deserve an educational environment free from fear and prejudice.

Sign this petition to demand changes within Alvin High School and ensure that every child has the opportunity to learn in a safe, inclusive, and respectful atmosphere. Let's be the change we want to see and build a future where all students are seen and valued for who they truly are.
