End police brutality against mentally ill individuals and NHS system failures.
The Issue
In the evening of June 26th 2026 my life changed forever. My son, a genuinly lovely young man with a a lot of loving friends and family , tragically took his own life mere hours after being subjected to what we all believe to be a brutal and unnecessary arrest.
He was a kind soul who struggled with mental health challenges, yet instead of receiving the compassion and support he desperately needed from the authorities, he was met with cruelty and negligence.
Presumptions were made and arrest was not needed. An agitated and untimely decision caused Xavier to suffer severe restraint tactics whilst already in crisis.
He clearly stated suicidal ideation, the need for an appointee, and mental health issues when he first encountered police.
He was found in distress and quite obviously had been assaulted.
This incident is not an isolated one. It brings to light a disturbing pattern of police interactions resulting in harm—or even death—to individuals with mental health issues. According to the National Mental Health Institute, people with mental illnesses are 16 times more likely to be killed during a police encounter than those without. Yet, despite these alarming statistics, comprehensive reforms remain scarce.
It also contributes to the worrying amount of mental health services neglect.
The inquest into my son's death was a painful process, offering no real support or accountability. This broken system needs transformation, beginning with the implementation of clearer, stronger laws safeguarding those with mental health issues during police encounters.
Xavier ( 25) also attended A+E after significant injuries including a head scan and heart ECG due to the effects of the arrest. His swollen hands not treated. Ignored for over 15 hours until eventually a mental health assessment was attempted. By this time he was probably incapable due to extreme distress. His family were not contacted. He left alone and desperate.
He committed suicide shortly after leaving hospital.
I am calling for the enactment of 'Xavier's Law,' in memory of my son. This law would mandate specialized training for law enforcement officers in dealing with mentally ill individuals, focusing on de-escalation techniques and mental health awareness. Moreover, it would create a civilian oversight committee to ensure transparency and accountability in cases involving mental health crises and for the handover to Hospital to include proper information.
Change is long overdue. It's time to protect our most vulnerable citizens, ensuring that no other family endures the heartbreak that has befallen mine. We must prioritize empathy over aggression, understanding over prejudice. I urge you to stand with me in this fight for justice and reform.
This will be profoundly helpful to my final campainge and hope as I am making a complaint to the police authorities as all other avenues have been roadblocked by the system.
