End pet euthanasia in San Antonio

End pet euthanasia in San Antonio
The Issue
Every year, thousands of innocent animals are euthanized in shelters across San Antonio due to lack of space, resources, and adoption. While the reasons behind these decisions are complex, the result remains heartbreaking and avoidable. In 2020 alone, the San Antonio Animal Care Services reported euthanizing approximately 3,000 animals, highlighting a dire need for change to save these lives and offer them a chance at happiness.
The practice of euthanasia, especially when preventable, not only impacts the animals but also affects the employees and volunteers who truly care for these animals. The emotional toll is significant, leading to compassion fatigue and burnout, limiting their ability to continue their service with the same dedication.
There are successful alternatives to euthanasia. Cities like Austin, Texas, have constructed comprehensive no-kill initiatives, achieving a 95% live-release rate. This model focusses on increased adoption events, community education, enhanced veterinary care, and fostering networks, along with partnerships with animal welfare organizations to increase resources.
San Antonio can achieve these results too. We urge city officials to adopt a "no-kill" policy by increasing funding towards San Antonio's shelters, enhancing community outreach programs to educate the public on responsible pet ownership, and building strong partnerships with local animal rescue organizations.
By reallocating resources to spay and neutering programs, encouraging long-term fostering, and creating a community-supported rehoming service for owners unable to keep their pets, we can significantly reduce the number of animals coming into shelters, thereby decreasing euthanasia rates.
We cannot continue to sit idle while the fate of thousands of animals rests on overcrowded shelters. By signing this petition, we demand immediate action from San Antonio's city council and relevant departments to implement a no-kill strategy.
