The Issue

Over the years, Marvel Comics has been publishing stories with gross misogyny in their comic book stories and their portrayals of their female characters.  In "The Amazing Spider-Man" comic books by previous writer Zeb Wells and approved by editor Nick Lowe, Mary Jane Watson was trapped in another dimension with Paul Rabin, who helped commit genocide with his father.  Mary Jane was stuck with Paul Rabin and two children, Owen and Romy Stephanie, that were created by magic.  Marvel even had the villain Rabin the Emissary refer to Mary Jane as the "scarlet woman" in Zeb Wells' run and that Mary Jane would "accept the chains" that bind her.  Mary Jane stayed with Paul and the children until they disappeared, though Mary Jane stayed in an emotionally abusive relationship with Paul for a while until they eventually broke up and Mary Jane is now the new Venom. Meanwhile, in the current "X-Men" comic books, Marvel published "X-Men Age of Revelation Infinity Comic" #4 by writer Tim Seeley where the mutant Magik, who started as a victim of child sex abuse, was sent to Limbo in her underwear, turned evil by two of her previous abusers, the demons Belasco and S'ym, and thanking S'ym for turning into Darkchild for sating "her pathetic needs".  The story has gained heavy backlash from rape survivors for its story and treatment towards Magik.  Both Zeb Wells and now Tim Seeley have gained backlash for their writing for their stories and Seeley recently quit Twitter due to fan backlash and unnecessary death threats.  However, Marvel Comics continues to allow misogynistic stories such as these to continue and does not take responsibility for their actions, which is ironic considering the slogan of their flagship hero Spider-Man is "With great power there must also come great responsibility."  We, the readers, want positive changes to be made at Marvel Comics, to stop the misogyny and abuse to their female characters, and to fire Editor In Chief C.B. Cebulski, "The Amazing Spider-Man" editor Nick Lowe, editor of the "X-Men" books Tom Brevoort, and writer Tim Seeley from Marvel Comics and to treat Mary Jane Watson, Magik, and ALL of their female characters respectfully.
