More than 120 people locked up at the Eloy Detention Center in Arizona have signed a letter describing conditions that no one should have to endure.

According to Andres David Torres Chirino, who wrote the letter and spoke with the Arizona Daily Star, the facility's drinking water left people with nausea, digestive problems, and throat issues. A broken pipe went unrepaired, leaving detainees to live with the smell of raw sewage. Dust from a poorly maintained air conditioning system made people sicker. When they sought medical help, guards refused to provide it.

Torres Chirino also described a segregation unit that detainees call "el hoyo" — "the hole" — where people are isolated for extended periods and allowed outside for only one hour, three days a week.

Liz Casey, an advocacy social worker with the Florence Immigrant and Refugee Rights Project, told the Arizona Daily Star that guards "know that there's little to no oversight and really no consequences for violating people's rights, for abuse, for medical neglect."

Torres Chirino filed formal grievances with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Nothing changed.

These are human beings — many with no criminal record, and some who have already won their legal cases in court and should be free. No one in government custody should be subjected to contaminated water, denied healthcare, or deliberate psychological abuse.
