End Mandatory Military Service in South Korea
End Mandatory Military Service in South Korea
The Issue
As a fan of Korean culture and entertainment, I have seen firsthand the impact mandatory military service has on individuals and their careers. Our beloved idols are forced to put their thriving careers on hold to serve in the military for nearly two years. This not only affects them but also millions of fans worldwide who support them.
Moreover, it's not just about celebrities. Every male citizen in Korea is required to serve in the military for 18 months (Marines), 21 months (Army or Marine Corps), 23 months (Navy) or 24 months (Air Force). This means that every family must part with their sons, brothers, husbands for this period - time that could be spent nurturing relationships and building a life together.
According to data from Statistics Korea, as many as five million men are estimated to be serving or have served in the military at any given time. That's five million lives disrupted.
While we understand and respect the need for national security, we believe there should be alternatives available that allow individuals to serve their country without sacrificing so much personal freedom.
We call upon the South Korean government to reconsider its policy on mandatory military service. Let's give our idols back their microphones and our men back their freedom! Sign this petition if you agree!
