End mandatory abortion coverage in health insurance

The Issue

I am not a biological woman, so why should I be forced to pay for someone else’s abortion through my mandatory health insurance? It’s unfair that mandatory payments for abortion services are bundled with health insurance policies, affecting people like me who don't need or want such coverage.

This issue is not just about personal finance; it’s about fairness and choice. When mandatory abortion coverage is included in all health insurance plans, it obligates individuals—no matter their gender, age, or personal beliefs—to pay for a service they might never use or morally oppose. Many health insurance plans, such as my own, are required by me by law to purchase, and thus I am obligated by the law to pay for other people's personal decisions. This lack of choice in coverage can feel like an unjust imposition on personal rights and freedoms. Furthermore, why should elective abortions be covered in insurance when they are personal life choices? If the decision is between the mother and doctor to make, it should not be forcibly subsidized by people who had no part in the decision and may be morally opposed to it.

According to a study by the Kaiser Family Foundation, more than 130 million Americans are linked to health insurance plans that may cover abortion services. This means countless people are potentially paying for procedures they neither require nor support. Ironically, this blanket policy often leaves individuals without the affordable, customizable coverage options they truly need for other health services.

Instead, health insurance companies should offer plans that let people decide whether they want to include abortion services. This model empowers consumers to tailor their insurance according to their own lives and beliefs. Furthermore, offering a choice promotes transparency and accountability in the insurance industry.

Please note this does not pertain to medically necessary abortions or other extenuating circumstances, as such are comparable to mandatory health insurance for male medical issues like testicular cancer; rather, this applies to elective abortions, which are personal life decisions.

By signing this petition, we demand that insurance companies and policymakers revise their policies to end mandatory abortion coverage in health insurance plans. Support individual choice and fairness in health insurance. Let’s work towards a system that respects personal beliefs and economic realities. Please sign and share this petition to make a change!
