In the first seven months of this year 109,446 cattle were exported from the Port of Townsville to SE Asia while in Western Australia, the only state that still exports live sheep by sea, 279,727 sheep were loaded onto ships at the Port of Fremantle for export to the Middle East prior to the start of the summer prohibition period (1 June to 14 September). More sheep left this week as exports resumed.
The federal parliament has passed legislation to phase-out live sheep exports by sea by 1 May 2028, but the industry is fighting to keep this cruel trade.
The NSW Parliament has established an inquiry into the phase-out of Australian live sheep exports by sea and they need to hear from you. (NSW no longer exports sheep by sea, only a small number by air to SE Asia). The sheep need you to remind this inquiry of the cruelty associated with the trade and to convey the community’s overwhelming support for the phase out. Ending the live sheep trade will be a start towards creating a kinder world for all Australian animals.
The Alliance for Animals has prepared a guide which makes it easy for you to write and lodge a submission. https://www.allianceforanimals.org.au/ourwork/submission-guide-nsw-live-export-inquiry?fbclid=IwY2xjawFUkAhleHRuA2FlbQIxMQABHQLh-KRHUUfE4NVDrO9CngtXHtjqq7md1SEF0XkAzytdGKG8-AeoQPgCzg_aem_ipDRGqnjl5q8GMV7BniLAw
