On 30 May 2011, Tommy's story horrified the world. This terrified steer stood trembling in an Indonesian slaughterhouse as he watched his friends butchered in front of him. Live exporters want the world to forget him and the others who have suffered and will continue to suffer until this cruel trade ends. Already this year 26 ships loaded with cattle have left the port of Townsville, 12 for Indonesia and 14 for Vietnam. Despite claims by the government and industry that the Exporter Supply Chain Assurance System (introduced in August 2011) protects Australian animals, the reality is that Australian Government regulation does not have legal effect in foreign jurisdictions. Once animals reach their port of destination they are outside the control of Australian law. The Australian federal government plans to end live sheep exports by sea on 1 May 2028, but there are no plans to end the live export of cattle, buffalo and goats. Please email the Minister for Agriculture, Murray Watt, minister.watt@aff.gov.au reminding him that ALL animals suffer when exported live for slaughter offshore and asking that his government legislate to end ALL live animal exports from Australia. Together we can end this cruel trade.
