Following the deaths of more than 100 cattle during a six day voyage from Darwin to Indonesia https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2024/mar/26/brahman-express-cattle-die-export-ship-australia-indonesia the Australian Veterinary Association (AVA), the peak body representing Australian veterinarians, has issued a media release saying their Assocation believes that when live export of animals by sea occurs, an Australian Accredited Veterinarian must accompany each shipment regardless of the length of the voyage. The Australian Standards for the Export of Livestock (ASEL) allow exporters to avoid the expense of having a vet on short haul voyages, such as the one involving the Brahman Express. The AVA is calling for vets on every voyage. https://www.ava.com.au/media-centre/death-of-over-100-cattle-on-live-export-ship-reinforces-the-need-for-veterinarians-on-every-voyage/ Please send a message to the Minister for Agriculture asking that until the Australian government ends this cruel trade an Australian Accredited Veterinarian accompanies every shipment regardless of the length of the voyage. https://minister.agriculture.gov.au/watt/contact
