The Issue

I am a convicted nonviolent felon from the state of Florida and have since completed my sentence with extensive commitment to change through drug treatment and mental health programs. Today, I work as a recovery coach, helping others in their journey towards recovery and societal reintegration.
I watch others continually face employment, housing and societal hurdles due to the permanent mark of felony on their records. Each day, thousands like me face the symbolic bars that hinder our potential to lead fulfilling lives and contribute positively to our communities.

In many states, including Florida, nonviolent felonies currently carry a lifelong stigma because the state lacks a system for expunging such records after a person has paid their debt to society. This reality undermines the foundational belief that people deserve second chances, particularly those who have shown evidence of rehabilitation and transformation.

According to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), there are approximately 2.2 million people in the United States with felony convictions who face such barriers. Among these individuals, a significant portion are nonviolent offenders who, like me, strive to integrate into society but are continually held back by a past we have worked diligently to overcome.

The State of Florida must offer a realistic and compassionate pathway for nonviolent felons to expunge their records. Such a framework would not only align with our collective values of redemption and opportunity but would also remove obstacles to employment, housing, and educational opportunities. Evidence suggests that providing this opportunity may reduce recidivism and, thereby, enhance public safety.

For these reasons, we call upon Florida legislators to take immediate action to enact laws that permit the expungement of nonviolent felonies. This change will empower reformed citizens to fully participate in and contribute to our society, strengthening the very fabric of Florida's communities.

Together, we can urge our lawmakers to usher in vital reforms that reflect both justice and hope for countless individuals striving to lead better lives. Your support is crucial in making Florida a state that truly believes in second chances. Sign today to make a difference!
