End lengthy imprisonment of Michigan's youth

End lengthy imprisonment of Michigan's youth
The Issue
James Washington (#303575) was given a 40-60 year sentence for an offense he committed when he was 17 years old. Today he is 43. Since being incarcerated , he has worked tirelessly to reform and transform himself. James has over 50 certificates from classes and programs, spends his free time as a prisoner observation aid ; who helps inmates with suicide prevention, all while maintaining a job as a Master Barber. He has engaged in positive community outreach, authored a book, mentored troubled teens, and is pursuing a degree—all in an effort to repaint the image he was given as a child.
The state of Michigan imposes harsh sentences on juvenile offenders, treating them as indistinguishable from adults. Scientific studies overwhelmingly show that teenagers' brains are still developing, making them prone to impulsive and uninformed decisions. According to the National Institute of Justice, youth who receive long sentences often face mental health issues and are denied opportunities for rehabilitation and education while incarcerated.
Juvenile offenders deserve a second chance—a chance to rehabilitate and reintegrate into society. Existing laws not only impact the inmates but also their families and the communities they should be contributing to. In Michigan, over 350 individuals were sentenced to life in prison as juveniles. These numbers highlight a grave issue that needs immediate reform.
We must call upon Michigan lawmakers to reform sentencing guidelines, focusing on rehabilitation over punishment. Community service, counseling, and education should replace incarceration for non-violent juvenile offenses. Rehabilitation programs should be expanded, and life sentences should be reserved only for the most extreme cases involving minors.
Let's push for laws that reflect the possibility of change and growth, not just punishment. Sign this petition to demand a more just and effective juvenile justice system in Michigan. Let’s offer our young people the opportunity to grow from their mistakes and become positive contributors to society.
This petition is not only to reform Michigan Sentencing, but who thinks James deserves a second chance ?
