As an openly gay journalist and activist, I've directly witnessed the torment afflicted on members of the LGBTQ+ community in Nigeria. The horrifying physical, emotional, and psychological harm caused by rampant homophobia is unbearable. This petition seeks justice for those who live in fear every day because of who they are and who they love.

In Nigeria, a 2014 law criminalizes same-sex relationships, stigmatizing an already marginalized segment of the population (source: Human Rights Watch). A detailed study conducted by the Initiative for Equal Rights revealed that nearly 90% of Nigerians support the maintenance of this legislation, further isolating and vilifying the LGBTQ+ community (source: TIERs, 2017).

This situation is not sustainable nor humane. As we close out the second decade of the 21st century, such discrimination is in clear violation of human rights norms. It is time for international bodies, local government, and society at large to pivot from ingrained prejudice, fear, and homophobia, towards understanding, empathy, and equality.

This campaign calls for the repeal of oppressive laws, increased legal protections, educational programs to challenge harmful stereotypes, and investments in resources for the emotional and physical wellbeing of Nigeria's LGBTQ+ community.
