In a distressing incident that highlights a growing issue in our society, a compassionate man was tragically killed while feeding animals. This incident is not an isolated one but is a part of a larger pattern of harassment faced by dedicated animal feeders, rescuers, and caretakers, particularly after the honorable Supreme Court’s recent order. Unfortunately, this decision has been misconstrued by some, turning their animosity towards both the feeders and the animals they care for, leading to an increase in hostility.

Animal feeders play a critical role in maintaining a balanced ecosystem by controlling stray animal populations, reducing the risk of bites, and promoting a harmonious human-animal coexistence. They form bonds with these animals, ensuring they are neutered and vaccinated, and if disrupted, the progress we have achieved in animal control will reverse.

Despite the Court never advocating against feeding, many people have taken it upon themselves to unjustly accuse and harass those who dedicate time, money, and love to ensuring stray animals are cared for. Women feeders, who form the backbone of these initiatives in India, bear the brunt of this backlash. Their contributions to society are invaluable, which is why it is crucial to protect and support their efforts.

We call upon the Indian government to take meaningful action by issuing identification cards to registered feeders, providing them legitimacy and protection under the law. In addition, implementing severe punishments, including a minimum of one month’s jail time for harassment, sends a clear message that such behavior is unacceptable.

Animal feeders are integral to our community’s well-being. By supporting them, we foster an environment of tolerance and compassion, fundamental to India’s values.
