Our nation is in a sad state following another mass shooting that could have possibly been prevented. Growing up in school in the 80’s and 90’s, I didn’t have to fear someone coming into my school, the movie theater, the grocery store or church with guns blazing! Nowadays kids and teachers have to prepare with active shooter drills and emergency exit plans.

Often times these mass shooters have a history of mental illness and/or treatment. After the fact we find out the person had a history of odd behavior and red flags were ignored. The majority of the guns used in mass shootings were legally sold to mentally unstable people or families with a mentally ill member in the home.

Please sign this petition and share in an attempt to have national gun laws around mental health strengthened! The only laws in place limit gun sales to individuals for just 5 years following a 5150 psych hold in a mental hospital or to adjudicated mentally ill people. These laws aren’t strong enough to prevent mass shootings.

Background checks for gun sales should include a release and review of mental health records. Mental health providers should be mandated reporters to gun sellers. It should be law that a family that has mental illness in its home should be required to register on a list similar to that of a sex offender list.

If we don’t act on this, we will continue to live in fear of the next shooting. More innocent people will die. Now is the time!
