The Issue

For decades, greyhounds have been exploited in the name of gambling. Forced to race under grueling conditions, these gentle dogs often suffer from serious injuries, neglect, and abandonment. While public awareness has grown and tracks have shut down across the country, betting on greyhound races is still legal in many states—and that needs to change now.

That’s why we support the recently introduced Greyhound Protection Act, a federal bill that would finally ban gambling on greyhound races across the U.S.

This legislation is long overdue. Although only two active tracks remain in the country, greyhound race gambling persists online, fueling an industry that most Americans have already rejected. The Humane Society has documented widespread abuse and injury in the greyhound racing world, from broken legs to untreated illnesses. When the races end, too many dogs are simply discarded—left behind by an industry that sees them as profit machines, not living beings.

The Greyhound Protection Act, introduced in Congress this August, would shut the final loophole—banning all forms of betting on greyhound races, including simulcast and online wagering. It’s a simple step that would align national law with the values of compassion, fairness, and animal welfare.

We urge the U.S. House and Senate, especially members of the Energy and Commerce Committee, to support and pass this bill without delay. Let’s stop propping up an industry built on cruelty.

Greyhounds are not ours to gamble with. Their suffering is not entertainment. Add your name and stand with the thousands of Americans demanding an end to greyhound race gambling—forever.
