The Issue

Walking through my local Canadian Tire store, I felt a surge of frustration. In the aisle lined with Nerf guns, I noticed an unpleasant reality—every single package featured boys. I want children’s toys  to show boys and girls so both genders can imagine that sky’s the limit.

Gender stereotypes in children's toys are an enduring problem, and their impacts can be profound. They dictate what interests children should pursue and influence their perceptions of gender roles from an early age, perpetuating outdated norms. According to a report by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), gender-specific marketing can limit children’s interests, skills, and careers, ultimately affecting their future opportunities.

This issue is not isolated to Nerf guns or Canadian retailers; it's a widespread problem across the toy industry. Companies like Hasbro and Mattel, responsible for iconic brands, need to embrace diversity and be mindful of representation. When children see themselves reflected in advertising, it encourages inclusivity and allows them to dream without limits.

We must urge toy companies to commit to gender-neutral branding and packaging that celebrates diversity. This includes featuring diverse genders in promotional materials, eliminating gender categories in toy sections, and committing to unbiased product presentations.

By signing this petition, you're not just supporting a personal plea—you're taking a stand for the countless children who deserve the freedom to explore interests unburdened by gender stereotypes. Let's pave the way for a more inclusive and equal play environment for all children. Please sign and support this petition to transform the toy industry today.
