End Gender Bias Against Men in Family Courts, Criminal Justice, and Mental Health Support

End Gender Bias Against Men in Family Courts, Criminal Justice, and Mental Health Support
The Issue
We, call for urgent action to address systemic gender biases against men in family courts, criminal justice, and mental health systems. These biases harm men, families, and society, and we demand evidence-based reforms to ensure equality under the law and in practice.
The Problem:
Family Courts: Men are awarded primary custody in only 15-20% of U.S. cases, despite evidence that shared parenting benefits children. Biases favoring mothers deny men equal parental rights.
Criminal Justice: Men receive 60% longer prison sentences than women for similar crimes, according to a 2012 study. This disparity reflects gender stereotypes in sentencing.
Mental Health: Men die by suicide at 3-4 times the rate of women, yet male-specific mental health programs are underfunded, and stigma discourages men from seeking help.
Fund Male Contraception Research: Increase NIH funding for male contraceptive development to 10% of reproductive health budgets, ensuring equitable options.
Our Demands:
Reform Family Court Laws: Enact legislation for default shared parenting in custody cases, unless evidence shows it’s not in the child’s best interest. Train judges to eliminate gender bias in custody decisions.
Ensure Sentencing Equity: Implement gender-neutral sentencing guidelines and expand implicit bias training for judges and prosecutors to address the 60% sentencing gap.
Fund Male Mental Health Programs: Allocate federal and state funding for male-specific mental health initiatives, including counseling and public campaigns to reduce stigma, modeled on successful programs like Australia’s “Man Up.”
Conduct a National Review: Establish a bipartisan task force to investigate gender biases against men across legal and social systems, with a report due within 12 months.
Why This Matters:
Gender equality means fairness for all. Addressing biases against men strengthens families, reduces incarceration disparities, and saves lives. By acting now, we can build a system that judges individuals based on facts, not stereotypes.
