Studies in Ontario show that male and female patients receive differing levels of financial priority. The noticeable  pay gap between procedures performed on male and female patients is both unjust and unfounded. Recent publications from the institutions such as Sunny brook Health Sciences Centre and Mount Sinai Hospital reveal a statistic: surgeons receive, on average, 28% less pay for reproductive and urological procedures conducted on female patients compared to those performed on male patients. 

An Ontario Medical Association analysis of more than 31,000 physicians found that female physicians had 13.5% lower adjusted daily billings than male physicians. The study found that the gap remained constant after factors such as specialty, years of experience, location and work outside regular hours. It was concluded that no single factor was able to fully explain the difference to physician payment systems in addressing the gender pay gap.

A 2023 study published in the Canadian Journal of Surgery examined comparable procedures involving female and male reproductive anatomy. Procedures involving female patient  anatomy such as hysterectomy over prostate surgeries were reimbursed at lower rates, reinforcing harmful stereotypes and biased practices. Ontario was among the provinces where the difference was statistically substantial.

To solve this issue, it is crucial that we call for immediate policy changes that ensure surgeons are paid equally, regardless of the patient's gender. By implementing a standardized pay structure, we can guarantee that all patients receive equitable treatment and care. Additionally, healthcare administrators should be pressured to revise their payment policies to eliminate this systemic bias. I am calling on Ontario Medical Association as relevant decisions makers to re-examine the evidence and overturn these gender-based disparities through Ontario's physician payment Committee.

Healthcare should be provided equally for a patient whether it be a woman or a man, regardless of gender.
