The Times has reported that 'gambling firms celebrate' as the government is preparing to U-turn on its proposals to end gambling sponsorship in football.
We simply can't let this happen.
The government must not cave to industry lobbying at this late stage and we remain hopeful they won't, given that the minister himself said recently that this was a ‘very serious issue’.
Football clubs and gambling companies have failed to self-regulate on advertising, resulting in 700 gambling ads in a single Premier League match. That’s why a watered-down voluntary measure won’t suffice
The evidence is clear - this form of advertising is so often the hook that draws young people into gambling – who are then cross-sold to more addictive products. This is where addiction takes hold and the consequence is more than one person every day taking their life because of gambling.
To do nothing on gambling advertising would be inexcusable and lead to more harm, more addiction and more deaths.
