Growing up, one of the most distressing instances I encountered in school was witnessing boys being reprimanded and, at times, physically punished simply due to the length of their hair. This experience deeply affected me because I watched as they were humiliated in front of their peers, their individuality disregarded, and their autonomy stripped away as they were forced into hairstyles that conformed to arbitrary rules. The emotional distress these students endured was palpable: feelings of powerlessness and suppression pervaded every such interaction.

In countless educational institutions, students, particularly boys, face restrictive policies on hair length and hairstyle. These enforced norms not only suppress individuality but also communicate a dangerous message: that conformity is preferred over personal expression and that one's personal choices are trivial in the grand scheme. It is crucial that schools nurture an environment where students learn to express themselves freely and feel valued for who they are, not for their uniformity.

More concerning is how some of these rules are executed. There are reports of students being subjected to physical punishment, threats, and verbal insults as a means of enforcing these outdated policies. Such practices qualify as mental and physical harassment and have no place in modern education.

According to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, everyone has the right to freedom of expression, which includes the freedom to represent one's identity through appearance. Moreover, recent studies indicate that schools which encourage personal expression through dress and hairstyles see higher levels of student engagement and creativity.

It is time for school authorities and policymakers to reconsider and abolish these restrictive hair policies. Encouraging self-expression does not disrupt the educational process—instead, it enhances it by fostering a creative, inclusive, and respectful learning environment.

This change is critical for students' well-being, mental health, and personal growth. No child should ever experience fear or humiliation simply because of how they choose to wear their hair.
