End forced contact with abusers in family court rulings

End forced contact with abusers in family court rulings
The Issue
As a survivor of domestic abuse, I've endured physical, sexual, and psychological trauma, including coercive control and intimidating behaviour. My experiences have made me profoundly aware of the dangers associated with allowing abusers to have contact with their children, yet our family justice system often forces survivors to co-parent with individuals who have caused us immense pain and damage.
This petition seeks to address critical issues within our family justice system. The proposed Bill will:
- End the assumption that contact between a child and an abusive parent is automatic. The safety and wellbeing of the child must always come first.
- Prevent courts from compelling survivors to co-parent with their abusers, which can place both the survivor and the child in jeopardy.
- Safeguard children from the ongoing trauma related to being forced into proximity with abusive individuals.
- Restore public confidence in the family justice system by prioritising the safety and mental health of both children and non-abusive parents.
According to studies, children exposed to domestic violence are at a significantly higher risk of developing anxiety, depression, and behavioural issues. Forcing these children to maintain contact with an abusive parent only compounds their trauma and undermines their ability to heal and grow in a safe environment.
It's essential that we take a stand to protect the innocence and security of children who have already suffered enough. By supporting this Bill, we can push towards a more just and compassionate approach in family law, ensuring that no child is ever placed in harm's way due to outdated legal assumptions.
I urge you to sign this petition. Let us work together to transform our family justice system, ensuring it safeguards the vulnerable, respects the rights of survivors, and prioritizes the wellbeing of our children. Every signature brings us one step closer to a safer future for families affected by domestic abuse. Please join us in this crucial effort.
