The Issue
My husband Rohan has been in prison for 18 years now serving an unfair and unjust sentence of Life Without Parole, also known as "the other death penalty". He was charged with Felony Murder, which states that any death which occurs during the commission or attempt to commit certain felonies is first-degree murder. All those involved, will most likely be held equally responsible. Rohan didn't harm anyone, he didn't have a weapon, and he wasn’t even there when the crime occurred. He came to California and was staying with a friend for a few days while taking care of a legal matter. During this time, he regretfully made some poor choices, which he takes full responsibility for. However, he does not deserve to die in prison at the hands of another person.
Rohan comes from a close-knit family that came to the America from Jamaica in 1987. He has been a hard worker and a productive member of society since he came to this country. He is a father to 4 beautiful children and due to his incarceration, as much as he tries to be involved in their lives, he has missed out on many milestones and events that have occurred while he is in prison. Throughout the years, Rohan continues to have strong support system. He makes it a point to talk to his siblings and children regularly. He is also very close with his parents, he talks to his mother daily, but sadly his father passed away recently. This was very hard for Rohan and his family, as Rohan was part of the glue that held the family together.
Rohan has never been in trouble or committed any crime in his life. He doesn't deserve the sentence he was given. During Rohan's incarceration, he has always remained optimistic and hopeful. He also makes sure he does his best to utilize his time in a positive way. He serves as a mentor to our incarcerated youth, and he is well respected among other inmates as well as prison staff. He is smart, responsible, goal driven, and has many talents.
I believe that everyone deserves a second chance. Despite Rohan's circumstances, he continues to be the best husband, loving father, supportive son and sibling to his family. We need him to be at home where he is loved and supported.
We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all the support!
