The Issue

My friend, a pensioner who inherited two homes, is being unjustly burdened by excessive council tax rates. Both properties required significant repairs, and despite her efforts, she has been unable to sell them. Coupled with the financial strain of maintaining these homes, she is now expected to pay three times the regular council tax rate on each property. This unfair policy targets individuals who have done well for themselves, creating undue stress and financial hardship especially for the elderly.

The current taxation system on second homes is unbalanced and punitive. It's not just about my friend; it's about many people across the UK who find themselves trapped in a similar situation. Pensioners, young families, and hardworking individuals who have invested in properties are being penalized rather than supported. Owning a second home should not be a catalyst for financial strain. Instead of promoting economic growth and providing opportunities, this policy stifles individual prosperity and discourages property investment.

Statistics show that punitive taxes can lead to stagnation in property markets rather than stimulating growth. Reports indicate that areas with high tax rates on second homes often see reduced investment and an increase in vacant properties. This not only affects the homeowners but also the local economy, as vacant homes do not contribute to neighbourhood vitality.

We propose that the government and local councils reassess the current tax regulations on second homes. A reasonable and equitable approach would be to introduce a tiered tax system based on property value and income level of the homeowners. Further, providing tax incentives for maintaining and renovating homes would lead to better property conditions and encourage homeowners to improve their properties, indirectly benefiting local economies.

Join us in urging the government to abolish the punitive council tax rates on second homes. We need to establish a fairer system that considers the real financial capabilities of property owners and supports their right to enjoy their assets without excessive financial penalties. Sign this petition today to encourage a balanced and just taxation policy for second homeowners, ensuring prosperity and fairness for all citizens.
