End Elephant Use in the Kandy Perahera in Sri Lanka Due to Cruelty and Safety Concerns

End Elephant Use in the Kandy Perahera in Sri Lanka Due to Cruelty and Safety Concerns
The Issue
Target: Sri Lankan Government, the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority and the Department of Cultural Affairs
We, the undersigned, urge the Sri Lankan Government, the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority and the Department of Cultural Affairs to take immediate action to remove elephants from the Kandy Perahera procession due to the cruelty inflicted upon these majestic creatures and the severe danger posed to attendees.
Elephants are wildlife, and their rightful place is in nature. Times have changed, and it is essential to recognize the evolving understanding of animal welfare and ethics. The practice of using elephants in the Kandy Perahera not only endangers their well-being but also perpetuates outdated and inhumane practices. These sentient beings are subjected to harsh conditions, including piercing with bull hooks and physical beatings, to break them psychologically for the event.
While the Sri Lankan government promotes the Kandy Perahera as a tourist attraction, the safety of attendees is severely compromised. On August 22, 2023, chaos unfolded as overheated and stressed out elephants rampaged through the streets, endangering the lives of both locals and tourists, highlighting the inherent risks of involving wild animals in such cultural events.
We need your signature now to prevent elephant exploitation in the upcoming Kandy Perahera and provide immediate care and relief to these captive beings.
As the world embraces compassion and empathy towards animals, it is crucial for Sri Lanka to evolve with the changing times. Many tourists are boycotting the event due to the cruelty and safety concerns associated with using elephants. We believe that a progressive society should prioritize the well-being of all sentient beings and promote cultural events that are ethical and humane.
We respectfully urge the Sri Lankan Government, the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority and the Department of Cultural Affairs to:
- Immediately cease the use of elephants in the Kandy Perahera to prevent further cruelty and suffering inflicted upon them.
- Explore creative and ethical alternatives that uphold the cultural and spiritual significance of the Perahera without animals
- Collaborate with reputable animal welfare organizations to ensure the implementation of best practices for caring for the captive elephants.
By taking these steps, Sri Lanka can position itself as a global leader in the evolution of culture to accommodate ethics, justice and compassion. Let us work together to protect the dignity and rights of animals and ensure the safety of all those attending cultural events.
Sign and share this petition to end the use of elephants in the Kandy Perahera, promoting a kinder and safer future for all.
