End E-Learning Days, Reinstate Traditional School Instruction in Charleston County

The Issue

As a parent of three students in Charleston County School District (CCSD) and a former homeschool mom, the sudden pivot of the district towards E-Learning days following inclement weather raises numerous concerns for me. Despite state requirements for 180 academic days, these hastily replaced e-learning days are not equivalent to a traditional school day's quality of instruction. Often, this comprises just a worksheet or two, far less than an immersive day of school. While safety is paramount, should school closures occur, a makeup day would provide a more equivalent solution for our children's education.

It's also significant to remember the different resources available to our young learners. Our elementary students lack the necessary technology such as Chromebooks at home to engage in a full day of e-learning. Furthermore, while school buildings close during these days, many parents are still required to work, placing an additional pressure on families in our community.

In light of the setbacks already imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic on our children's academic progress, this new mechanism of e-learning days feels like a step backward rather than forward in the quality of education provided.

I call upon CCSD to reconsider their stance on e-Learning days in place of inclement weather closures. Let us prioritize a comprehensive, consistent education for the sake of our children's future. Please sign this petition to support a return to in-school instruction and optional makeup days if necessary.
