UPDATE ON DOG CHAINING IN NASSAU COUNTY, FLORIDA The most recent revision of the Nassau County animal ordinance, known as the “Alternate Version” was introduced on March 6, 2018. It allows dogs to be transported in open trucks and open trailers without being restrained in any manner. Dog kennels need to be large enough to allow the dog to sit, stand, lie down and make other normal body movements. The Alternate Version states that dogs can be chained (tethered) and unattended all day, all night, all year. Dogs can be chained on vacant land and abandoned property. The chain can be of any length and of any weight. The proposed changes were made in response to input from several public forums held in Nassau C0unty, Florida. If Nassau County commissioners pass the Alternate Version, it will be a giant step backwards for animal welfare in Nassau County. Contact the Nassau County Commissioners today and let them know you want then to pass an ordinance that allows attended tethering only and that requires that dogs are safely secured in open trucks. Be sure to tell them you are a Nassau County resident and you vote!
