End Discrimination and Harassment in the Trades

End Discrimination and Harassment in the Trades
The Issue
As an indigenous single mother of three striving to obtain my red seal in plumbing, I found myself at a crossroads. Despite my commitment and drive to complete level 2 of my training, I found myself in a position where fear overshadowed ambition. Not only was I battling the everyday challenges of supporting my family but I was additionally confronted with the distressing reality of racism and discrimination in my workplace, which escalated my mental health issues to an unbearable extent. The belittlement and mental distress led me to thoughts of suicide. Even after sharing my issues with peers the issue was dealt with quickly. The tention made it hard to focus and uncomfortable . I found the situation worsened to a point that I resign from my position. When I turned to my union rep and let him know it was unacceptable how I was talked to , he smiled and said the phrase: " this is the trades" as if I was to except the total lack of respect.
I again stood up at a meeting at the union hall and expressed that I shouldn't be yelled at by my journey man and it needed to stop. No word or action was taken other then going over the minutes from last meeting.
I then contacted a member who helps women In the trades. I was told "awe I'm sorry I wish I could do something". No suggestion of things that could be looked at or ways to better the work place.
It is unfortunate that not just myself but all trades people could face these challenges in our career particularly those in male-dominated fields. Our struggles are only amplified by the lack of adequate childcare, and support systems that are crucial to our success. .
providing and promoting adequate mental health resources for all trades individuals. Insuring the laws and regulations are being enforced and individuals are held accountable for their actions. Harsher punishment should be implemented.Nobody in any field of work in Canada is allowed to be treated this way. The trades are no different. They don’t follow the laws set out for all Canadians. The trades knowingly in-gages in this behaviour and get away with it with no consequences.
I understand it's difficult to speak up in fear of backlash. I have nothing to loose anymore so I'll speak up for all you amazing trades individuals
