End discrimination against the general category in India

The Issue

India, a nation known for its rich diversity and democratic principles, is unfortunately grappling with a deeply entrenched issue of discrimination against the general category in its quest for social justice and equality. While affirmative action policies were established with noble intentions to uplift marginalized communities, an unintended consequence has been the marginalization of individuals belonging to the general, or unreserved, category.

This growing imbalance has resulted in qualified candidates being excluded from educational and employment opportunities solely based on their unreserved status. It undermines the fundamental principle of equality, where merit should be the primary criterion for success, not one's birth category.

Statistics indicate that reserved category individuals have access to nearly 50-60% of opportunities in public sector jobs and academic institutions, leaving the remaining positions to fierce competition among the general category. This imbalance not only affects the aspirations of millions of young Indians but also limits the nation's ability to harness its full potential by not utilizing a significant portion of its talent pool.

To address this issue, we propose a re-evaluation of the current reservation system. The emphasis should be on creating a more balanced approach that maintains support for marginalized groups while ensuring equal opportunities for all citizens. Potential steps could include setting aside a certain percentage of opportunities specifically for economically disadvantaged individuals within the general category or implementing a sliding scale system that considers socio-economic factors irrespective of caste.

It is crucial for the government and policymakers to acknowledge and address these grievances to restore faith in the idea of a just and equitable society. By doing so, India can lead by example, demonstrating that true equality can be achieved without compromising the needs and opportunities of any segment of its society.

Join us in calling on the Indian government to review and reform the reservation policies to ensure fairness and equality for all citizens. Your signature can make a difference. Sign the petition today.
