End Discrimination Against Stray Pets in Public Community Parks

The Issue

We tell this story on behalf of a stray Indian breed dog, an Indie that faced discrimination in a South East Delhi community park, namely Ramasharnam Park Block E LajpatNagar III, owned by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). This leashed Indie enjoys daily walks, but a local resident objected to his presence and even objected to his walking outside the park on MCD roads. The guard of this locality confirmed that pets aren't allowed inside the park— an act of blatant discrimination.

This 10month old Indie dog doesn't only face prejudice but also verbal abuse from the local residents. This problem goes beyond just the Indie breed, and it's about how we treat all stray animals in our communities.

Newtown Dog Park Study, Sydney, shows that public parks help nurture bonds between pets and humans and also between the community members (Sydney University, 2018). Shouldn't our community parks in India serve the same purpose?

Indian Municipal Bodies need to clarify their guidelines towards pets, especially strays. These bodies must ensure all stakeholders, especially Colony Block Presidents and RWAs understand and respect these guidelines.

Let's call on the MCD Delhi to stop the discrimination against stray pets and create an inclusive environment for all.

Please sign this petition to insist on clear, fair, and well-enforced municipal guidelines regarding stray pets in our shared public spaces.
