The Issue

I’ve been a truck driver for seven years, and during this time, I’ve witnessed firsthand the predatory practices within our industry that have remained unchanged. While other sectors have progressed and adjusted regulations to ensure fair treatment and compensation, truck drivers continue to suffer under outdated and misleading practices. The current system does not treat us as the professionals we are; rather, it often seems designed to exploit us like indentured servants. Our voices have been silenced for too long, and I am determined to speak up against this injustice.

Each day, countless professional drivers face unfair mileage pay practices which are misleading and do not fairly compensate the effort and time spent on the road. This is compounded by an ever-growing national truck parking shortage that endangers drivers' safety and makes us choose between legal compliance and personal safety. It is time for federal regulators to take decisive action and put an end to these injustices.

The issue of deceptive mileage pay means that drivers are not paid for all the hours they work, often only compensated for the miles driven, disregarding time lost in traffic, delays during loading and unloading, and any route detours. This results in pay that can fall below minimum wage standards, putting unnecessary financial stress on hard-working individuals who support our country’s economy by moving goods nationwide.

Furthermore, the chronic lack of safe, legal truck parking further jeopardizes driver safety. With limited parking spaces, drivers are forced to park in unsafe areas or face penalties for exceeding driving time regulations. According to the American Trucking Associations, the truck parking shortage costs drivers thousands in fines and missed deliveries and negatively impacts our nation's supply chain efficiency.

Concrete and actionable solutions are necessary to address these urgent issues. Federal regulators must mandate transparent mileage pay practices that ensure truckers are compensated fairly for their time and work beyond the miles driven. Additionally, investing in expanding safe and accessible truck parking facilities across the nation is vital to keeping our roads safe and allowing drivers to rest legally and peacefully.

By signing this petition, you are standing in solidarity with truck drivers nationwide who deserve fair pay and safe working conditions. Together, we can urge federal regulators to enact meaningful changes that protect the rights and livelihoods of those behind the wheel. Help us end the deceptive pay practices and address the truck parking shortage to create a fairer, safer trucking industry for all. Sign the petition today.
